DJI Mavic 3 Pro: I'm Amazed and Confused

Here are the notes from my phone, that I was reading off in the above video:

After a few flights with the DJI Mavic 3 Pro, I expected to have much more confidence filming with this drone - but there are a lot of different things to remember when using this drone. While I was out flying this drone, I wrote down my thoughts, so this is my first impression review of the Mavic 3 Pro.

Mavic 3 Pro Camera

  • Exposure and camera settings are different between the 3 cameras

    • Different ISO ranges, different aperture ranges or even fixed apertures

  • Each camera has a different picture profile to record in

    • All have normal, but others can’t record in HLG, D-LOG or D-LOG M

  • Color assist is a great addition, so you can get see your colors more clearly. Would love to be able to upload custom LUTs.

  • Tap to focus is essential when using the 3 or 7x cameras. The drone may try to focus on something else if you’re not paying attention, only to realize when you’re playing your footage back on a larger screen

  • Flying with the 3 or 7x camera is almost impossible. If I’m flying anywhere, I have to use the 1x camera.

  • The longer the focal length, the slower you have to fly. More compression, background looks closer

Mavic 3 Pro Remote Control

  • I love having a dedicated controller, but changing cameras takes a while. The controller lags for a second while youre changing cameras, and seems like it’s taking a long time. I would not change cameras while flying forward.

  • Like the Mavic 3 Classic with the DJI remote, if you’re flying in an unlock zone, you’ll have to hotspot into your phone to input the code and unlock the region. Make sure you have your phone connection setup before you go out and shoot. Because I didn’t and I had to spend 5 minutes inputting passwords and waiting on a connection, just to input the code.

  • Check your firmware updates and flysafe database updates on wifi before leaving.

    • I’m making a preflight checklist for this drone, so if you’re interested in that, click the link in the description. If it’s out, you can buy the LUT pack and checklist, if it’s not there will be an email waitlist to sign up, then yell at me on twitter to hurry up and make it.

Mavic 3 Pro Tracking

  • I have to get used to the tracking modes as well, active track isn’t available in all modes, I’ll have to do some testing to see how the different tracking modes work with each camera. I used point of interest with the 7x camera and there was a lot of camera shake. Active track was not available in 7x. Tracking on the 1x camera was significantly smoother.
