Pyxis, FX6, Komodo + Sirui IronStar 1.5X Anamorphic T1.9
Sirui Ironstar Character & First Impressions
My first impressions of the Sirui Ironstar 60mm, it has a pretty clean aesthetic for an anamorphic lens. I’m thinking of these lenses as cleaner anamorphics, with less “character”.
The unique part of these lenses for me, is that these lenses are actually usable wide open.
I did a test at golden hour running through the aputure range, and T1.9 was sharp, and the anamorphic flare was a little more washed out.
For me, I love flares that are the same color as my light source, so golden hour footage has a warmer flare. I like this, it feels like it belongs in the footage rather than a blue flare all the time.
These lenses are also available in a blue flare if you want them though.
The flares are more apparent on these lenses when you have a darker background, with light going directly down the barrel of the lens. These are more subtle
As you stop down the lens, the flare becomes smaller, sharper and does not wash out the frame as much.
Bokeh First Impressions
There is still oval bokeh, but the bokeh is pretty clean. It’s oval bokeh shaped, but with the quality of a spherical lens. Very interesting
Color Fringing and Chromatic Aberrations
There is some color fringing wide open, but there is much less fringing when stopping down to T2.8.
Color Casting
Initial color chips on the vector scope show that these lenses skew a little warmer. Cyan, Blue and Magenta are a little less saturated than the Reds and Yellows, Greens skew a little yellow, but about average saturation.
Full Review Coming Soon
I asked you guys on instagram what you wanted to see in the longer review, I got the typical responses, but also a few actually good ones. I’ll be including flaring, bokeh, minimum focus, color comparison and more test footage in the review.
Let me know if there is anything else you’d like to know about these lenses in the comments on YouTube.
